Happy 2019: our New Year is this Thursday
Our New Year, Kudus Yohannes, is this Thursday, 11 September, and at home it is 2019. We keep the old calendar: twelve months of thirty days and a short thirteenth one, about seven years behind yours, with New Year in September and Christmas on 7 January. It comes at the end of the long rains, when the hills go yellow with daisies, so it has always felt like a fresh start. Across the border they call the day Enkutatash.
